08 Sep A day in the Atlas Mountains

The new season is officially starting here in Marrakech and after a warm summer we look forward to a long and beautiful autumn. September, October, November and December are great months here in the Red City with temperatures around 25 degrees and sunny days best enjoyed from the roof terrace of 72 Riad Living with the Atlas Mountains as a majestic back drop.

The beautiful snow capped Atlas Mountains

There are many interesting day excursions you can do from Marrakech and our team at 72 Riad Living are always here to help you plan that perfect trip outside the Medina. One of the most popular day-trips that our guests appreciate is to go to the Atlas Mountains. It is just a one-hour drive from our Riad to reach these mountains where you can enjoy the stunning nature, crisp air, go trekking, visit genuine Berber villages or just enjoy a long lunch with a spectacular view.

There’s nothing like a road trip in the Atlas Mountains

Ourika Valley is a popular destination in the Atlas Mountains. The drive up here takes you through some amazing nature and you get to see some genuine and rural parts of Morocco. Once you arrive our guide can take you trekking and you can also visit the dramatic Setti Fatma falls, a series of 7 cascading waterfalls that flow into the Ourika River and make a thrilling scramble for adventurous travelers.

Set at around 1,300 meters, Ourika not only offers welcome respite from the summer heat of Marrakech but makes a popular base-camp for winter tourists visiting the ski resort of Oukaimeden. The area’s principal attraction is its traditional Berber settlements and the valley sides are dotted with red mud-built houses, camouflaged against the sparse mountain slopes. The main Berber village of Setti Fatma, where we can arrange for you to have a genuine Berber lunch with a local family.

Kabah Tamadot in the Atlas Mountains

For those looking for a more upscale lunch experience and enjoy the views over the Atlas Mountains in a five-star setting we can recommend Kasbah Tamadot, the spectacular property of eccentric billionaire Sir Richard Branson, or the very stylish Kasbah Bab Ourika.

Another destination in the Atlas Mountains, also approximately a one-hour drive from Marrakech, is the little mountain town of Imlil. Imlil is nestled in the mountains at the foothills of Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa. This is a charming little town where you can find excellent carpets at really good prices. It is the perfect spot for a bit more challenging treks and make sure you stop at Kasbah Toubkal to enjoy a lunch or mint tea at the terrace with the best possible view over these stunning mountains.

Trekking in Imlil in the Atlas Mountains is an unforgettable experience

Our team at 72 Riad Living is here to assist you and to individually tailor that perfect day-trip to the Atlas Mountains or anywhere else you might go. We only work with the best drivers and English-speaking guides to make sure you have a memorable experience.

We look forward to welcome you to 72 Riad Living in the heart of the Marrakech Medina.
