30 Jun Summer in Marrakech

By Mandy Sinclair

With lower than seasonal temperatures here in Marrakech, we are enjoying the warm sunny days and cool evenings on the terrace.  Yet, we know the mercury is going to rise sooner or later, and so when it does it’s time to start planning how to beat the heat.  We’ve compiled a list of a few of our favourites:

With no shortage of beach clubs and private pools, this is a great way to spend a hot summer day.  For waterslides and fun, head to Oasiria.  For a more relaxed experience, head to Terra Ababila for a BBQ lunch and afternoon relaxing by the pool.  This private villa is part of our riad collection and is open to non-residents who would like a quiet afternoon.  The cost is 30 Euros per person and includes pool access and lunch by the pool.  A private transfer can be arranged for 30 Euros (up to four people) by calling 0524 387629 and asking for Terra Ababila. Hammam treatments can also be organized for guests who would like the ultimate relaxation experience.

For a more upbeat atmosphere, join the beautiful people at the trendy Nikki Beach where the DJ spins the latest tracks in to the early evening.  Located in the Palmeraie district, this is the place to see and be seen.

A day in the countryside

With temperatures slightly lower and located just a short drive from Marrakech, we recommend a day in the Atlas Mountains.  Half-day trekking through the valleys with a local guide can be arranged followed by lunch with a view at Kasbah du Toubkal.  For something more relaxing and luxurious, book a table at Kasbah Tamadot and unwind with a glass of wine while appreciating the views of the surrounding villages.

Getaway to the coast

For either a day trip or a night away, Essaouira is one of our favourite escapes.  This quiet seaside town is perfect for wandering through the medina, people watching in one of the cafes, and shopping in the laid-back shops.  For lunch with views of the coast and the medina, head to Taros, located on the main square.  One of the few bars in Essaouira, this is always a fun place to spend an evening.

Souking in the summer

If souking is high on your list of things to do, we recommend heading out around 10 a.m. before the midday sun makes the shopping experience less than ideal.  The shops in Souk Cherifa and Pop-up Shop located inside Le Jardin are some of our favourite stops in the medina and a great break from the sunny souks.
